The inside story
Founded in 1847, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona is the largest Italian style opera in Europe. Throughout its more than 170-year history, the Liceu has been a privileged spectator of the most crucial events of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, becoming a social and cultural point of reference for Barcelona and Catalonia.
It began as the Amateur Dramatic Society, created in 1837 in the former Convent of Montsió by some members of the National Militia. The need to create a music conservatory in a period in which Barcelona was going through a time of strong economic and demographic expansion followed. In 1838, the society changed its name to the Reina Isabel II Dramatic Philharmonic Liceo of Barcelona, to promote not only the development of theatre but also Italian style singing and music.
On January 31, 1994, a fire broke out that destroyed the hall and stage and a major project to rebuild the theatre was required. The newly built Liceu kept an appearance similar to the previous one, but, this time, equipped with a very advanced technical infrastructure. It re-opened its doors in October 1999.
During the guided tours, in addition to learning about the long history of the Liceu, visitors can admire the architecture and rich decoration of its rooms up close. In the main hall, eclectic in style, there is the large central staircase that leads to the Hall of Mirrors. After extensive restoration work, the ceiling paintings in this historic room look better than ever. The next stop is the Concert Hall, inspired by the Teatro alla Scala in Milan. This horseshoe-shaped hall has a capacity for more than 2,200 people, making the Liceu one of the largest opera houses in Europe.
Located in the heart of Barcelona, it is easy to reach the Liceu by foot or bicycle. The closest metro stop is Liceu (line 3), and bus lines V13 and 59 also stop near the entrance.
