Initially, Birkenau operated as a camp for Soviet prisoners, but eventually, it became a concentration camp for inmates of various nationalities and a center for the extermination of Jews. The prisoners of the Birkenau camps lived in 30 brick barracks and about 250 wooden barracks of different types.
