The inside story
Jump on board the world's only surviving British clipper ship and experience a taste of what life was like on the open seas for a sailor back in the late 1800s. Discover 150 years of history in this interactive museum ship through the tales of Cutty Sark’s famous voyages.
Built in Scotland in 1869 for the Jock Willis Shipping Line, the Cutty Sark was one of the last clippers to be built and one of the fastest of her time. Originally built to transport tea from China to Britain, the Cutty Sark spent less than ten years on the tea trade. Steamships took over the tea run with the opening of the Suez Canal, which meant that steamships now enjoyed a much shorter route to China, and it became too competitive for Clippers to continue transporting tea.
