The inside story
Discover the iconic tribute to Shakespeare on the banks of the River Thames. Shakespeare's Globe is a reconstruction of the original Globe Theatre, an Elizabethan playhouse built in 1599, where audiences saw some of William Shakespeare’s best-known plays. In 1613, it burned to the ground and a second Globe was built on the same site in 1614. The second Globe theatre was demolished in 1644 and the modern reconstruction standing today was opened to the public in 1994.
Learn about Shakespeare's life and works, the fascinating stories of Elizabethan theatre and how this imaginative and experimental open-air theatre space works today. Plays are staged during the summer and in winter the theatre is used for educational purposes. Guided tours are available all year round and give visitors a chance to discover the history and construction of this iconic building.
