The inside story
Located in the Grimsnes area of south Iceland, Kerid Crater, or Kerið, is a volcanic crater lake. At approximately 3,000 years old, it's half the age of most volcanic calderas in Iceland but this has its advantages. The sloping sides of the crater are still a bright red which contrasts with the landscape and is one of the reasons that it draws so many tourists. There's a path around the edge of the crater so that you can admire it from every angle and you can even go down to the water at the bottom to get a closer look.
Kerid Crater is one of several volcanic crater lakes in the area known as Iceland's Western Volcanic Zone and is close to the Golden Circle. The Golden Circle is a tourist route which spans from Reykjavik and incorporates three primary stops along the way: Þingvellir National Park, Gullfoss waterfall and Haukadalur. If you're travelling along this popular route, it's definitely worth stopping to check Kerid Crater out!
