An enchanting mix pastel-coloured palaces and churches, La Laguna is one of Tenerife's prettiest towns. Add on its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it makes for one great day trip destination. Arianne, one of our expert guides, says, ‘This tour was crafted to introduce you to the secret corners of La Laguna's past. It's the perfect excursion if you love history and mystery.'
Nestled in a valley in the shadow of Mount Teide volcano, La Laguna is crammed with beautiful colonial architecture. The compact old town covers a grid eight streets wide and eight streets long. Here, there are dozens of palaces – many with traditional ornate wooden balconies – and religious buildings, from dinky sanctuaries to the ruins of a burned-out convent. It's a layout that's considered the model for later colonial cities in Latin America.
As you explore these history-steeped streets, you'll get the lowdown on La Laguna's rich past. Learn all about its role in the Napoleonic Wars at pretty Plaza de la Junta Suprema and visit the neo-classical cathedral to see treasures such as its lavish gilded altar dedicated to the Virgin of Los Remedios. You'll also visit the antique-laden Cayetano Gomez Felipe Museum, which is housed in an 18th century palace with a cool courtyard. And there's a stop by the Leal Theatre. Also on the agenda is an artisan shop that makes footwear and accessories from Canary Islands banana fibres, which helps local farmers. No two pairs of shoes are the same.
