The inside story
The University of Wroclaw, was founded in 1702 by Emperor Leopold I of Habsburg with five faculties of Catholic theology, evangelical theology, law, medicine and philosophy to which the faculty of Slavic languages and literature were added. Today the university is located in the center of the largest Baroque complex in the city, consisting of the ancient College and the Jesuit Church and is one of the most important examples of this artistic movement in continental Europe.
Visit the main building of the city’s university where you'll find the Wroclaw University Museum and the Leopoldinum Hall with an elaborately decorated Baroque hall, Aula Leopoldina, featuring a ceiling fresco, gilded stucco and sculpted cherubs. Other must-sees include the Oratorium Marianum music hall, which has served as a concert space for over 200 years, as well as the astronomical observatory located in the 42-meter high Mathematical Tower housing historic astronomers' equipment, including a 14th-century astrolabe, a 16th-century heavenly globe and a compass date to 1665.
