The inside story
The Castelo de São Jorge, also known as the Lisbon Castle, looms over the city of Lisbon with its monumental construction from the 12th-14th centuries. Discover the two distinct parts of the castle - the older Moorish Castle and the newer Royal Palace. Much of the palace was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, but thanks to a restoration project in the 1920's, the palace remains close to its original construction today. The Castelo de São Jorge is the most populated tourist attraction in Lisbon, so we recommend booking tickets ahead of time to skip the long entrance lines, especially during the summer months. For fewer crowds, consider visiting in the morning hours.
