The inside story

With 100 works coming from private collections, the Mudec retraces the entire career of Jean-Michel Basquiat, the James Dean of modern art. The American artist, who died in 1988 at the age of 27 from a heroin and alcohol cocktail, had the merit of conferring on graffiti and street art the dignity of museum works.

Basquiat made his debut in the late seventies with some graffiti signed under the pseudonym of Samo. In 1983, his meeting with Andy Warhol, who became his mentor, decreed his artistic fortune, as well as his friendship with Keith Haring.

Visit the exhibition and grab the essence of Basquiat's works, where the metropolitan energy of New York City is mixed with the re-enactment of the African roots of the artist.

Tormented by a difficult life, Basquiat sublimated into art the violent emotions of street life, the instinct for rebellion, the desire for redemption. These instances are shaped in a style that draws inspiration from American pop art and mass media, comics and advertising languages.
