The inside story
Immerse yourself in the magic of long-forgotten worlds in this illustrious museum aptly named for the ancient city of Pergamon, which also gave the museum its star attraction the Pergamon Altar. From Babylon to Uruk, Priene and ancient Egypt, the museum showcases grand archaeological treasures discovered in excavations by the Berlin museums from 1878 to 1886.
The impressive three-wing complex is divided into the following collections: Vorderasiatisches Museum (Museum of the Ancient Near East), The Staatliche Museen’s Antikensammlung (Collection of Classical Antiquities) and Museum für Islamische Kunst (Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo). A visual feast of the antiquities and a lesson in the stunning architectural feats of the past, highlights include the monumental Pergamon Altar, the marbled Market Gate of Miletus, the Ishtar Gate and Processional Way from Babylon, and the Mshatta Facade.
