Discover the ancient hilltop town of Montalcino in Val d’Orcia, where every activity revolves around wine production. One of its wines especially makes this place famous all over the world: Brunello di Montalcino, which is produced here using Sangiovese grapes.
Your day begins with a scenic drive south of Florence through the hills of Chianti toward Montalcino. The scenery here is breathtaking – cypress trees, olive groves, vineyards, fields and livestock, with the extraordinary palette of colors Tuscany is known for all over the world.
The first stop will be at a small winery near Montalcino. During the visit, you will meet the winemaker and follow the different stages of wine production. You will discover the history and origins of Brunello and the other wines produced in the estate. After a walk through the vineyards and the cellar, you'll end your visit with a wine tasting.
You will then enjoy a three-course lunch at Castello Banfi, a medieval castle towering above the rolling hills and lush vineyards - definitely a must-see. La Taverna restaurant offers delicious Tuscan dishes in the vaulted cellars of the building, with sturdy wooden tables placed under the broad brick arches where oversized wooden casks of Brunello di Montalcino once rested.
After lunch, you will visit another very special winery and meet the producer of one of the most renowned Brunello wines. The visit is followed by three tastings.
