The inside story
The Marienplatz (St. Mary's Square) is the central square in the city centre of Munich and the beginning of the pedestrian zone. The square is surrounded by a multitude of historical buildings, including the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) in the northern part, Old Town Hall in the eastern part, and the Mariensäule in the middle of the square.
The Mariensäule, a Marian column after which the square was named, is topped by a golden statue of the Virgin Mary. Dating back to 1638, this column stands over 35 feet and was built to celebrate the end of Swedish occupation after the Thirty Years War.
