The inside story
Gamla Stan, or Old Town, is one of the largest medieval city centres in Europe. It consists of four islands: Stadsholmen being the main island and three smaller islands Riddarholmen, Helgeandsholmen and Strömsborg. Dating back to the 13th century, Gamla Stan consists of archaic architecture, narrow cobblestone streets and medieval alleyways. The architecture of the city was heavily influenced by Northern Germany.
Old Town (Gamla Stan) is full of windy narrow streets and consists of buildings that are different shades of gold which makes the city centre unique. It is home to many historical buildings and museums such as the Stockholm Cathedral, the Nobel Museum, the Riddarholm church, and the Royal Palace just to name a few. The Royal Palace is said to be one of the biggest palaces in the world, consisting of over 600 rooms.
