Top attractions in Valencia
The inside story
Set in the former riverbed of River Turia, this awe-inspiring entertainment complex is largely the work of locally born star architect Santiago Calatrava. A cluster of six bone-white buildings that bring to mind the giant vertebrae of some prehistoric animal, the design appears both ancient and boldly futuristic. While the project was originally criticized by locals for going vastly over budget, the complex has since become one of Valencia’s most beloved attractions.
Home to a 3D cinema (the Hemisfèric), the largest aquarium in Europe (the Oceanográfico), an interactive science museum (Prince Felipe Museum of Sciences), and the spectacular opera house (the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía) among other sights, this multifunctional and family-friendly space has plenty to keep you entertained. Complemented by reflective pools and tranquil streams, the impressive setting also makes for an atmospheric stroll day or night.
