The inside story
The United States Capitol is one of the most recognisable landmarks in Washington, D.C. It is where the US Congress meets and is home to the House of Representatives and the Senate. Originally completed in 1800, the building is located on Capitol Hill on the eastern end of Pennsylvania Avenue.
During the War of 1812, the US Capitol was nearly burned to the ground after the Brits had invaded the capital. Five years later, the building was restored and received a massive extension. It wasn't until 1850 that the iconic dome was added to the US Capitol building.
