The inside story

On the rugged northwest coast of Sal, Buracona Lagoon is a natural swimming spot known for its volcanic rock formations and striking blue waters. The lagoon sits inside a rocky cove shaped by the Atlantic, while nearby cliffs and lava fields give the landscape a distinctly wild character. It is also home to the famous Blue Eye, a sea cave where sunlight creates an intense blue glow on the water at certain times of day.

You can explore the rocky surroundings, swim in the natural pools when conditions allow, or peer into the Blue Eye from the viewing area above the cave. The surrounding landscape is part of Sal’s volcanic heritage, with dark rock contrasting against the bright Atlantic and dry island terrain. The Blue Eye is not actually a blue pool, but an opening in the rock that allows sunlight to illuminate the seawater below, creating the vivid colour.
