Imagine a place where the sands of the desert have been touched by the magic of Hollywood stardust. You’ve found it with this two‑day tour, which’ll show you some of Tunisia’s most iconic film locations. Along the way, you’ll visit a Roman amphitheatre, wander through underground cave houses, cross a shimmering salt lake and see a secluded oasis on the fringes of the Sahara.
Your sandy adventure begins at the El Jem Colosseum, an ancient Roman theatre that once seated 35,000 spectators for gladiator fights and chariot races. Then, it’s on to Matmata for lunch and a visit to the rock‑cut cave homes featured in two Star Wars films – the real‑world setting for Luke Skywalker’s childhood home. You’ll wrap up the day in the palm‑filled oasis town of Douz, where you’ll spend the night. And, if you’re up for it, you can also take an optional camel or carriage ride into the desert.
After breakfast, you’ll cross Chott el Djerid, a huge salt lake where rust‑red streaks and shimmering white flats blur into a heat‑hazy mirage. From here, you’ll hop into a 4x4 and head to Onk Jemal, home to the Star Wars desert film‑set city – a remote, otherworldly location that shows how Tunisia’s dramatic landscapes were transformed into the backdrop of an alien world. Lunch follows in Gafsa, before you round off the tour with a photo stop in Kairouan – a great spot for snapping Instagram‑worthy shots of the Islamic architecture the town is known for.
