The inside story
The Central Market of Valencia is a public market located opposite the Lonja de la Seda (Silk Exchange) and the church of Santos Juanes, in the center of the city. Inaugurated in 1928, it is one of the main works of Valencian modernism. The architects in charge of the project were Alejandro Soler March and Francisco Guardia Vial, and later Enrique Viedma and Ángel Romaní.
The building, which occupies a surface area of more than 86,000 ft2, stands out for its enormous metal structure, the domes, the stained-glass windows, and the precious ceramic coverings. As if it were a real "cathedral of the senses", the explosion of colors, flavors, and smells in this unique enclave attracts Valencians as well as national and international visitors.
Originally, its interior was designed to house more than 900 food stalls. Today, it has approximately 300 stalls selling a wide variety of products: fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and seafood, cold meats and cheese, salted and pickled meats and pickles, etc. There are also several souvenir shops and restaurants.
The Central Market is, without a doubt, an essential stop to get to know the architecture and gastronomy of Valencia. Come to the Plaça de la Ciutat de Bruges in the historic center, from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm (Monday to Saturday), and discover it for yourself.
